Qantas first class, Tiger standby and physiotherapy clinics

As many of you may know, I love to refer to the airline industry when talking all things private practice. Yes, my brother is a captain for Qantas airways and my wife did work for Ansett airlines but keep reading and you will see where I’m going.

Physiotherapists and allied health practitioners almost always undersell, offering the bare minimum of treatment options, a Tiger airways standby ticket in other words. 

We prejudge patients’ financial situations. We fear so much, any prospect of over servicing (and rightly so) that we grossly under service. If physios were selling tickets for flights the vast majority of us would offer Tiger standby tickets first!

It’s insane!

We should offer the absolute best there is, which is Qantas first class, and only then offer business class or economy if your customer/patient informs you that Qantas first class is not for them.

Professor Craig Allingham (physiotherapist) once showed me this,

Underservice (verb): The action of knowingly or unknowingly offering a client or customer a product or service that is of the minimum required level to match your preconceived idea of what they actually want, can afford, can understand or may need to get the results they are after. A lost opportunity for all parties!

Amaze your patients with your skills, dazzle them with what you can do, impress them with the outcomes and exceed all their expectations… only a Qantas first class attitude can do this. Always offer the absolute best that you can do. Don’t compromise.

It is interesting to note that post Covid, Tiger airways no longer exists but Qantas airways is still going and sustainable, a lesson here for us all.
